Indian Cartoonists to adhere to Mamata guidelines

And before I go on, it is indeed important to know ‘Mamata who?’

Mamata (or Mamta) is a Hindi word which means ‘Mother’s Care, Love & Affection’. In Indian context, it becomes important. But a lady in West Bengal is doing something extraordinary confusing (quite opposite to it).
And I too shall confuse you and…ok! No…but! Ya….let me Speak about ‘Mamta’ whichever you can relate too. [this dilemma is important for my blog’s existence]

A cartoon by a Chemistry professor came out. When I heard about that while travelling in Delhi Metro, I thought ‘wow’. A cartoon by a chemistry prof, must be interesting. He must have taken a quick comic stand on the structures of testosterone’s OH group (in chemistry, it’s called alcoholic group) and estrogen’s COOH group (acid group! Though I have to admit, I have very limited knowledge about the structure of the female hormone) and then he must have compared to the Lefts/Rights of West Bengal. But like always, expectations lead to disappointments. Cruel news channel broadcasted the story and to my shear disappointment, the chemistry professor did not adhered to his area of expertise. It wasn’t about the testosterone/estrogen’s structure, infact it wasn’t about chemistry, infact it wasn’t a cartoon. All it was about was Mamata and her definition to define cartoon and what are the sections under which you can be tried if you don’t draw her ‘good’ cartoons. Fearful I am [ab mera kya hoga!]

This blog (SPEAKing PICtures) was first started to store my cartoons (namely earlier as FUNTOONs). At that time, I had limited space on my disks. Some brilliant optimizers convinced me to store my useless caricatures here (on web) and instead insisted to store those movies on the disk and make the collection. Collection, I am obviously not going to talk about. Thanks to that! I can call myself a movie jockey today and a sorry cartoonist.

So being a self-acclaimed cartoonist, I could technically testify that it wasn’t a cartoon. It was just a graphic (with very-very bad finish to it). But in the end, it highlighted the issue better than a cartoon. But the whole episode gave me quite a few insights about cartoons. And the reasons for not making cartoons of my opposite gender (F). I earlier thought, because they wear fake-up on their face most of the time, caricatures of them won’t be a good proposition (a manger should say 'an asset building exercise') all together and might harm the cartoonist’s somewhat acceptability. But thanks to Mamata, I now know the IPC sections under which I can be tried (like the graphic designer Prof. Ambikesh Mahapatra, the chemistry professor of Jadavpur University). Therefore, I be rather preventive (a pre-crisis strategy taught to me to avert Crisis in most relevant subject of MBA - Interpersonal Communication’s lecture of Crisis Management). Otherwise the trials can happen under –
- IPC section 500 (punishment of defamation). Cartoonists are already poor and not identified under BPL families even if they are. This section can really take of their existence. Risk type - Fatal
- IPC section 509 (make obscene gesture to a woman). Risk type – Fatal again especially if you are single and unmarried
- IPC section 114 (abettor present when offence is committed). Sorry! Can’t understand. Haven’t studied this in my legal aspects of business paper.
- sections 66 A and B of the IT Act (sending offensive communication). OMG! A simple cartoon under this. Savita Bhabhi might now feel a bit less important.

Essentially the sections above produce enough threat/risk/whatever for a cartoonist to have a take on females. But then, how will the guru from whom I copied my cartooning skills, Sudhir Tailang survive. For today’s India which is full of American fatty-acids, the cartoons of Behenji, Amma, Didi, Honourable? President, Madam, Devi can provide enough laughs to keep the heart fit. Imagine the consequences of a healthy laughing India - the planning commission will have to brainstorm less over the poverty line and can more time in planning IPL boundary lines. A reduction in poverty line will result an affordable consumption of Colas in the booming company. Bollywood ke starsons will then advertise BPL pack only for this much (marketers will call it ‘change the game’ strategy – an upliftment for the deprived…target bottom of the pyramid…wow)…I can’t stop, it’s like ‘Alice In Wonderland’.

But sadly, Mamata has no mamta for cartoonists. She feels offensive, threatened and what not. I can now see myself as a terrorist with a pen in hand and a smile (always). Obviously! The character sketch seems to be of an assassin (thanks to another Bengali – Bob Biswas in Kahaani). So, West Bengal if things remain same, it will be really difficult to speak/express/love/mamta.

A strong part of me has Bengal in it (thanks to my Mamta’s roots). The best thing about Calcutta is its charm and that everyone is kind of ‘livable-respectfully’ satisfied, if not rich. Oh! It is becoming nostalgic now, the charm of West Bengal (contact any of your Bong friend for a detailed account of this). My mother always says that Bengalis are a kind of oxymorons. They look loud & aggressive but are not (comparative to guys/dudes/jats of North). Bengalis are more expressive and creative. Creativity is the food for soul. May be thatswhy I perceive West Bengal to be satisfied. But if the current Mamata is supporting the arrest of chemistry prof…then I think
Think…
Think…
It’s right. Twist!. How dare he (the prof) infiltrate in the territory of cartoonists. All he made was a graphic yet he wanted to have all the fame. Cartoonists of India will not agree to this. And for TMC’s Mamata Di, they will drink Bournvita (on recommendation of quiz master Brien, who is silent after drinking it and not heard). They are also ready to go through the easy readable sections of IPC and make more cartoons of Mamata.

Now I regret my right palm fracture. I have lost the Golden opportunity to impress Didi. Somehow I have added a caricature, adopted from my publication at IIT Kanpur. However! I hope my fraternity of cartoonists (if they accept that I am a part) will remind of our love for your acts always.

(disclaimer – the reader should not assume that the author is a leftist sympathizer. And obviously this write-up is not intended to (cannot) cause any harm/offense/hurting. If it did, apologies in advance).

YaaBaa DaaBaa do0O for Kung-Fu King Po0O

Heeeeee-Hawwww...YaaaHoo
Po0O is back. Kung Fu Panda is that brand of cartoon movies which typifies the art of associating absurd characters with their allotted roles. Imagine a fatso Panda doing Kung-Pu (and not simple pawing)? Imagine a goose as father of a giant Panda? Kung-Fu Panda made us believe that and illustrated the power of animation movies by becoming a big hit. The first edition was also an Oscar nominee.

Dear Movie viewers,
I am glad to inform you that Kung-Fu Panda 2 sets the same standards and enjoyment level like its predecessor. Therefore, it has been rated at 4.5/5

Story –
The giant Panda Po0O is now The Dragon Warrior in the Valley of Peace and along with the Fantastic Furious Five, he has to now deal a new enemy. The Peacock that is (super surprise) – Lord Shen. The evil Peacock (yes I used the adjective evil for a Peacock) wants to end Kung-Fu with the help of a canon-gun and our Super Strong Six (Po0O + the Furious Five) now have to stop him. Along with this, Po0O also has to find solace with his inner mystery about his origin.

Voice-Cast -
The life in the cartoon characters in an animated movie is given by its voice. The Incredibles, The Toy Story series are prime example. No wonder why characters like Woody in Toy Story cannot be identified without Tom Hanks’s voice.
Po0O, the Giant Great Panda cannot have an effective presence without the voice support of Jack Black. The voice is as tangy as the Panda’s Kung-Fu movements. Expressive, funny and effective (most importantly). Be ready to hear Jack Black as voice artist for Po0O in the next edition (as you tend to identify characters by their voices, example – Tom Hanks as voice artist for Woody, the cowboy and Tim Allen for Buzz LightYear for all Toy Story parts).
Tigress is voiced by Angelina Jolie and this time around, both the dialogues and the voice seem more effective. Lord Shen voiced by Gary Oldman makes him hear villainous. Rest of lot is all good.

Kung-Fu Panda 2 has great visuals (not a surprise as coming from DreamWorks Animation). The movie has some great scenes (even fight scenes) with great comic timing. The dialogues and one-lines are top class supported amazing well by all voice artists. The story by Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel serves all. Apart from Kung-Fu fight scenes, there are great set pieces where we see introspection and self-questioning. Kung-Fu Panda 2 is fulfilling both to eyes and soul.

What works – cartoons & characters & everything about them
What not – nothing negative just that movie should have been longer (greed of a viewer)

Speaking Pictures's verdict – YaaBaa DaaBaa do0O for Kung-Fu King Po0O. Kung-Fu the summer heat with this. Must watch.
ps: I seriously pray that Kung Fu Panda 2 will not inspire a movie like Chandni Chowk To China to be remade.

100th year of International Women’s Day - 8th March 2010

(click on the cartoon for full view)
8th March 2010 was celebrated across the globe as 100th year of International Women’s Day.
Two very important happenings took place that very day. Firstly, Kathryn Bigelow (director, The Hurt Locker) became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for Best Director. Secondly, world largest democracy's main opposition party Lok Sabha head (Mrs. Sushma Swaraj) voiced concurrently with the high command of largest party of world’s largest democracy (Mrs. Sonia Gandhi) over 33% reservation for women in parliamentary legislature.
ps: I usually don’t sketch females but after witnessing Mr. Ajit Ninan sketching Sonia Gandhi (that too LIVE), I have attempted the same in this caricature. Hope it reflects.

Sachin Tendulkar – not out after 20 years

Something from my wrist for his wrists.

24th Feb 2010 - the day dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar (God of Cricket he is!). And all those fabulous lines like “form is temporary, class is permanent”…they sound so true once you see Tendulkar. Man! what a knock he had yesterday – 200 not out that too against South Africa.

Left early because the poor office doesn’t have a television. I left my working premises when he was on 126* and by the time the big greeny DTC touched DND expressway, the Nokia tuned to loudspeaker mode and happiness was spread all over the over-crowed vehicle. Cheers n all bliss

ps: for the first time I have put colour to my cartoons. Do you like it...put your thoughts in comments

15th Feb 2010

A day of immense importance as I turned 24 on this day and entered the countdown towards my 25, the silver anniversary. Voila! Am excited abhi se.

And was extremely lucky that evening as I attended the talk by eminent cartoonists @ British Council (CP, New Delhi). Cartoonists included Mr. Ajit Ninan (cartoonist, The Times of India) and Mr. Martin Rowson (cartoonist, The Guardian, UK).
The talk started with Mr. Martin Rowson giving a presentation on past and present cartoons taking us through evolution of cartoons. The chronological styled presentation had major events of world cartoonized in the most humorous style; all giving an intended message and making that sarcastic statement. The presentation also made me realize how ‘open’ UK’s society is? Man! They can show off testicles (hand appearing in between legs giving that look of adultery) and butts in newspapers with no fear or shyness. Bush and Blair are the prime guinea pigs for Martin and almost every second cartoon of his had these two world leaders. An eye opener which I got to know from one of his cartoons was that
“total aid given to developing countries was less than one-third of total bonus paid to bankers in US in pre-recessionary market”.
I have started admiring him for his sense of humour. Like me he can humourize just anything ;)

Next speaker was Mr. Ajit Ninan (cartoonist, the Times of India). Incase you follow his cartoons, you will know his style. His cartoons are more statement oriented rather than eye-pleasing. He gave his insights on cartooning and those were simply brilliant. A couple of them –
1) use of minimum words so that even a Chinese can understand what you want to say.
2) the charm of hand-made black and white caricature and the philosophy behind the reasons for one's choice of black or white in his creations

I indeed was very lucky to see both of them cartooning LIVE. Infact I got a cartoon exclusive for myself from Mr. Ajit Ninan – the best of Best Wishes received on my 24th birthday. Man! He took less than 15 seconds to do it. Am wondering whether he actually lifted the pen or not?
The congregation was organized to announce the winners of a cartoon contest (click here to view finalists and winners). I too was a participant but my entry didn’t made it though. Here is mine (copyrights - British Council, CP, New Delhi)

ps: Very special thanks to Su, Tau, KP for taking time and wishing me. Thanks to NRI Singh, Sethi saab for their online versions. Party coming soon…
Cheers
AG

Tribute to Late Shri Amrish Puri

Wow! Returning to posting cartoons after nearly 3 years. And it was a very unfortunate observation which asked me to do so.

On 12th January, I incidentally stooped upon one of the local cable channels which was showing cult classic Mr. INDIA. Coincidently, the date also matched with the death anniversary of its villain – Mogambo (played by Late Shri Amrish Puri).

Now why do I admire him? Man! It takes guts to deliver lines with that devilish instinct knowing the fact those will be beaten (forced) by any stupid dialogue by hero. Every movie at its end will have his dead face and crowds will be happy after he dies. I still can’t figure out what motivation is needed to say ‘yes’ for villain roles. May be somebody wants to take the challenge and say in his grave voice, “ache kaam karke to sab upar uth lete hain, par main bura banke upar utoonga” (everybody can rise by doing good, but I shall rise by being bad).

It reflects attitude and in a way, an adamant route to bring upon success by choosing a hard way…and AG likes that

A tribute from my side…a caricature attempt to generate the mightily evil characters which he played during his glorious career as villain. Hope you can make out - Barrister Indrajeet Chadha (Damini), Mola Ram (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), Dong (Tehelka), Bhairo Nath (Nagina) and the character which brought him the maximum pleasure – Mogambo (Mr. India).

Jaaaaaane Tu....Ya Jaane Na

2008 is a disaster for movies. Movies like Krazzy 4 can compel anybody to NOT watch bollywood flicks. So, here comes a movie namely Jaane tu…ya jaane na (JTYJN) with which am opening my movie review account of 2008…

Ratings first – 3/5 (assessing the current bollywood scene). Jaane tu…to start with is a romantic teen flick with a very charming portrait of college life.

Storyline isn’t that great nor is it a creative masterpiece but still it has something new…thanks to the newcomers.
Here is a brief abstract of Jaane tu…..story :-
Set up in Mumbai, we have a college, in it a gang of friends and residing in that are our couple. RATS, the boy (Imran aka Jai) and MEOW, the girl (Aditi aka Jenelia) are the main protagonist here. RATS is a smarty who believes in principle of ‘ahinsha’ and prefers working from brain rather than bones; CATS in the converse of RATS, she believes in ‘eye for an eye’ and is willing to slap/abuse naughty guys anyday anytime anysecond. In the first half of the movie, the boy and the girl are JUST FRIENDS and deny any ‘beyond-friendship’ relationship. First half is a reflection of college masti and silly fun-filled incidents. As the plot proceeds towards the second half, the campus mind attains maturity and we see an adaptation of the famous ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ plot (remember that KKK…Kabaadi Khan-Kajol-Rani Mukherjee movie). Both, RATS and MEOW know what type of partner they need and as usual they get it VVery easily. So RATS gets a cutie who cracks world’s worst PJs and MEOW gets a stud. But soon, their anxiety/ crush ends and both now suffer from emotional imbalances. End you all now…it’s predictable. Overall, second half doesn’t match upto first half in terms of college masti but still you never feel its been stretched except the climax.

Few things I fail to understand; Arbaaz and Sohail Khan as Rajasthani Cowdays (Man, who got this idea!! Will he give more ideas like these in more bollywood movies??). However, few things which were really very impressive and unique w.r.t. routine bollywood like Jai not carrying a cell because he didn’t felt to have one…(Man, this sounds like a rational thought)

Now the characters (USP of the movie).

Imran Khan (Jai/RATS) – Confident Talented Dude - A future romantic hero was sure. He has a face which girls love and somewhere I found his effort comparable to Ruslaan Mumtaz of Mp3. He has potential, he has Aamir Khan's backing…rest is future.

Jenelia (Aditi/MEOW) – Cute Innocent Boxer - Her performance looks original and mature (unlike Hazel in MP3). The casting team could have given this role to any hot chick supermodel but then they won’t get the performance or that originality which she has delivered.

Prateek Patil (played Aditi’s bro) – Devil’s Advocate - Man, I am waiting for his next movie. Got less than 10 scenes in movie but every scene by him was full of class. The way he used sarcastic humour in his dialogues…superb…played an essential role in the plot.

Music is given by AR Rehman who once again proves he can adapt to any script. From senti song ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi’ to dance track ‘Pappu can’t dance saala’, his work is really outstanding. The songs esp. the songs of first half set up a good platform and amplify the viewer interest.

Some lines from Jaane tu –

"Pyara sa ladka chahiye hota, toh tujhse shaadi kar leiti, I want a man" – Aditi
“Everybody knows that Rats and Meow are perfect for each other, but do they really know?” – Somebody at airport
“Yes i am running, sometimes thats what all we can do” – Aditi

Hum Tum

A cartoon post after a very long period (18 months) and what a way to arise to the occasion; back with the two indelible cartoons idols – Hum and Tum. Salute to the man who created these. Meanwhile, two lines for each from this cartoonist -

Master HUM - a cool customer, his debonair reflects naughtiness and the best thing about him; he always manages to wear those tension-free smiles.

Miss TUM – Always in ‘pink’ and her looks radiates harmful ultra-attitude waves….

Hopefully more cartoons coming soon (an optimist’s view)…

If you take any view/angle about anything (about the topic, some improvements which you can point out, characters/personalities whom you wish to cartoonize(see) through me in future, etc…) please lend your words to my ears through comments…

bricks & bouquets, criticism & compliments…..ALWAYS WELCOME

This cartoon sketch reveals the situation after Bihar's election results came out. This was the time when Ram Villas Paswan became the 'kingmaker'. Both Lalu express and Rabri express were derailed while their voyage towards the CM's post.
